Eric Goes A Cache Hunting!

Went for a bit of a stroll today (for details CLICK HERE) near home with Steve and the old man, en route we stopped to have a look for a geocache (La Cova del Runar de la Mona - GC1HY5A) and this bit of vid was taken while I was mid cache hunt!

Rockfall at Pas de la Rabosa

There has recently been rumours of a rock collapse at Pas de la Rabosa (Foxes Pass or Fat Mans Agony) on the north side of the Sierra Aitana. Because this is a popular route with walkers as a means of getting on and off the summit, Eric and I decided that we should go and investigate. From the Font de la Ferrata there are two routes onto the summit, the first (the easier of the two) via the path that leads up to Pas de la Rabosa, or second which goes straight up onto the summit. Being a fairly cool day (around 30°C) we decided to ascend via the direct route and return via Rabosa.

Eric and me on the summit (the highest point in the Alicante province)

Just after coming through the Pas de la Rabosa on our descent, prior to this point we had seen no evidence of new rockfall. Here Eric takes a well earned rest and thinks about his sister Mabel. Click on any of the photos to enlarge.

It was just after this that we discovered that the rumours are true and there has indeed been a significant rock fall. I would not like to have been stood there taking photos when this happened!

Canyoning - Baranc de l'Infern

Just got back from a days canyoning with Mick Lomas (one of the more adventurous guests to stay at Casa Blava!) We went to the Barranc de l'Infern which is just over an hour from Sella. Stunning scenery, incredible rock formations and 9 abseils all added up for a great day out, which I would recommend to anyone who enjoys a bit of an adventure.

It was a great time of year to go, with all the pools bar one being dry and the one that was'nt offered a welcome cooling down in the 30°C plus temperatures. The actual canyon took just under 3 hours and the walk out up the river bed and then zig zagging up and ancient stepped Mozarabic path another two where, a well offering cool mountain spring water near the top of the path was a very welcome sight!

Fiesta de la Burra (Donkey Fiesta)

This Saturday will see Sellas first Fiesta de la Burra (Donkey Fiesta). Like I was, you are probably asking yourself what in the name of all things equine is that all about?

Well, this is a fund raising activity being organized by the Sella Fiesta Commission. There will be music, food and drinks available and of course the main event.

My understanding is that part of the plaza Mayor (main square) is to have numbered squares painted on it, participants are then going to be invited to 'buy a square' (or more than one) and then at some point during the day (probably late morning) a donkey will be brought into the plaza. The donkey will then be restricted to the area where the squares have been painted on the floor and participants will have to wait (you're going to love this) until the donkey does a number 2. Whoever has bought the square where the donkey poo lands will be the winner!!!

UPDATE - 19/06/11

Once all 304 squares had been sold (approx 14:00) the donkey was led into the restricted area where we waited, and waited, and waited! This put me in mind of that old English saying, "You can lead a donkey to the square, but you cannot make it sh*t!" Eventually at about 19:30 she obliged and a winner was declared!

Benidorm Low Cost Music Festival 2011

La Casa Blava is still available for the dates 21st to 23rd July, so why not combine the tranquility of Sella with an awesome weekend of live music?

If last year was anything to go by, then with a new bigger venue and spread over three nights instead of two 2011 promises to be even better. Last years festival included such bands as Placebo, The Editors and These New Puritans amongst many others.

Fine By Day & Snow By Night

Its been a great week for walking here, both in and around Sella. I have done a Val de Arc / Golero combo, the Buddhist Valley and this afternoon a quick Peña de Sella. Every day has been sunny with clear blue skies and (once everything has warmed up) temperatures up in the high teens, perfect walking conditions. It does of course cool down pretty quickly once the sun has set, but I was still surprised this afternoon when coming off the Peña, in shorts and a tee shirt to actually end up walking on snow! MHS

Bernia Ridge Traverse

With it's eastern end starting near the coast between Altea and Calpe, and stretching for 3.5Km inland the Bernia Ridge is a striking local landmark that is hard to miss as you drive up and down the Costa Blanca.

Starting out at 08:30 myself and 2 friends (Terry & Jim) set off towards the East Summit. After 8 glorious hours which were filled with lots of scrambling, one piece of technical climbing and several abseils as well as never ending, breathtaking 360° views in perfect conditions (cool but with clear blue skies) our Bernia traverse was over. Back at the car with a well earned beer in hand as we looked back up at the ridge Jim described our excursion as 'one of the best days out on the Costa Blanca' (and he's had a few!).

January Challenge 2011

28.8Km Circular Walk Around the Sierra Aitana

This years January Challenge which took part on Monday 03rd attracted higher numbers than any previous year, with participants setting their own challenge and walking varying distances of between 11 and 28Km. We had a perfect day with clear blue skies and sunshine, although it was a bit cool in the shade of the northern side of the Sierra Aitana!

Many thanks to everyone who took part and ROLL ON 2012!!!
